If you come to forums like Reddit you will see a lot of business owners complaining about:
– Recruiting and keeping good people is tough.
– I can’t keep doing everything myself.
– I’m usually working 7 days a week.
– It feels faster to do it yourself.
– Burnout from working 12-18 hour days.
– My personal life is pretty much gone.
Why it happens?
Because launching a business is like starting and accelerating a car.
1st gear – the founder does everything themselves
2nd gear – assembles a team and delegates owner’s work to them
3rd gear – learns how to sell, get more clients, money in, provide the team with payable work
4th gear – improves the business model, finds a product-on-market fit, and earns more profit for further development.
In the first gear, the owner’s own energy is the fuel. In subsequent gears, the business begins to move forward with the energy of others, which allows the founder to work less.
The problem is that very transition to next gear requires for owner to learn new things and start to think and act another way. So most of small business owners don’t make transition and continue to drive in 1st gear.
You’ve probably seen cars like this on business highways: the main stream is moving at 100+ km/h, and small cars with roaring engines and stuck first gear are trying to catch up.
Or maybe it’s not even a car in first gear, but a person on an e-scooter?
